Every California LLC, Corporation, and Limited Partnership must designate a registered agent. This guide explains who can serve, what the address requirements are, the $25 change process, and why most founders use a professional agent.

California registered agent requirements

• Physical California address. P.O. Boxes are not accepted. Must be a street address where the agent is physically available during business hours.
• At least 18 years old. Minors cannot serve as registered agents.
• California resident or authorized business entity. Individuals must be California residents. Entities must be authorized to do business in California.
• Acceptance of appointment. The agent must formally accept the appointment. California rejects filings where the acceptance is missing.
• Available during regular business hours. The address must be staffed to accept Service of Process and official state correspondence.
